Is your List of Jobs kept up to date? I don't want a list of jobs that have already been filled!
The List of Jobs changes every day. We have a multi-level system for keeping the "dead wood" to a minimum. When we do not hear from an employer within a 45-day period, we contact them by email, fax, post card, or telephone to find out if their job is still open. If the employer fails to respond, we remove the job from the List. Because it would be impractical and annoying if we tried to contact all of our employers every day to see if their jobs were still open, there are always some jobs on our active list that are no longer available. Generally the "dead wood" is kept below 20%.
Equimax jobs are located primarily in the continental United States and sometimes in other locations. The jobs tend to be spread out all over the place and do not concentrate in large numbers in any one location. There is a minor trend that follows population. Wherever there are more people, there are also likely to be more horses and more jobs. This makes states like New York and California generally more active than states like North Dakota and Idaho. Remember: you need only one right job, and a good job can come up anywhere.
How do employers find out about Equimax?
Because we have been in business since 1986, over half of our clients come from word of mouth. We advertise in the largest general interest horse industry trade journals such as Equus, Practical Horseman, Horse Illustrated, and Western Horseman. We also advertise in most major breed magazines. We are linked to key horse industry search engines and link sites on the internet.
Are your clients large or small farms and ranches?
Equimax serves all sizes and types of operations -- large and small, public and private. Because there are more small to medium size operations out there than any other kind, many Equimax jobs fall into that category; however, our clients also include the largest and the most well known farms and ranches.
Do you "screen" your Employers?
All of the information on our List of Jobs is provided to us by the employers and is not followed up in any way. We intentionally do not screen either job seekers or employers. It would be prohibitively expensive and not very effective for Equimax to screen clients. It is simply not possible to adequately screen anyone by telephone. Job seekers are encouraged to investigate each potential opportunity carefully, whether found through Equimax or any other source.
What kinds of jobs do you have?
The most common type of jobs in the Equimax system are full-time hands-on jobs working with horses themselves. Common job titles include groom, stable help, caretaker, trainer, riding instructor, breeding manager, and farm manager, but other types of jobs are also available. We have had jobs with guest ranches, summer camps, the circus, associations, suppliers of horse industry products and services, administrative jobs, and more. Are Equimax services available just on the Internet?
No. There are three ways to receive information from Equimax: postal mail, fax, and at our web site. If you have easy access to the Internet, we recommend the web site service, because the lists at our web site are updated every working day. You may also convert from one type of service to another (additional fees may apply), but you may only receive information in one of the three ways at any given time (to avoid confusion). For a description of our services, click here .
Is it better just to subscribe to the List of Jobs or also to be listed on the List of Candidates?
We have numerous employers who only subscribe to the List of Candidates and do NOT list any job on the List of Jobs. So we recommend that you be listed on our List of Candidates as well as subscribing to the List of Jobs. In some situations, it may make sense for you to just subscribe to the List of Jobs -- for example, if you want to keep your search highly confidential, if you will not be available to handle incoming inquiries from employers, or if you are merely investigating the job market. However, not being listed on the List of Candidates may reduce the effectiveness of the service.
Does Equimax ever provide information on its clients to other companies or third parties?
Absolutely not! We do not sell mailing lists to other companies. We do not supply any information about our clients to anyone unless you have given us permission to do so by including a Job Listing or a Candidate Listing in your order. Then and only then, we distribute just the information you have specified, and it is distributed only via the List of Candidates and the List of Jobs. Your privacy is our concern.
Will the Equimax system work for me? Is there a guarantee?
The Equimax system works for lots of people, but not for everyone. Using Equimax is similar to placing an ad in a magazine to sell a horse. You pay your fee to the magazine for the advertisement, but that does not mean you are guaranteed to sell the horse. It is possible to set yourself up for failure using the Equimax system. If you are looking for a job that is extremely difficult to find or doesn't exist, you are asking too high a salary, you are too picky about your job, you are looking for a job that you don't truly qualify for, or you don't take your competition into account, the Equimax system may not work for you every time. On the other hand, if you are looking for the kind of job we see on a regular basis and can consider a good sized geographical area, we can be optimistic about you having opportunities to consider through Equimax. Ask us to help you with the process. We have the experience.
How successful are job seekers at finding jobs through the Equimax system?
Many people find jobs through Equimax. However, each job seeker's experience with the service is unique. Some job seekers find jobs quickly, others it takes a while, and still others don't find what they are looking for. So many variables exist in the employment process that it is impossible to predict success in advance. Sometimes we recommend just giving it a try to see what happens. Maybe the right job for you is already in our system just
waiting for you to subscribe. What do other people say about Equimax?
All businesses have their critics, but people frequently tell us how much they appreciate the service. To see what a few of our customers say, click here.
How do I get a job, if I am not a citizen of the United States?
To get a job when you are a non-citizen, you must first find an employer that is interested in hiring you. Then the employer must apply to the U.S. Immigration Service for a visa for you. This can be a lengthy and involved process with no guaranteed outcome. Many employers are not familiar with the process of sponsoring a non-citizen. You will need to thoroughly understand the process yourself and may need to help potential employers understand it as well. To read more about this process, click here.
Is there a best time of year to look for a job?
Not really. Equimax has a surprisingly steady flow of full-time year-round jobs throughout the year. Of course, some jobs (such as those with summer camps or guest ranches) are seasonal and tend to occur at particular times of the year. If you have a specific question about when to look for a particular kind of job, ask us using the email link at the bottom of this page.
What is the biggest mistake job seekers tend to make?
We see people make lots of mistakes, and we are available to help you avoid them. Just ask us. However, the most common mistake made by job seekers is to underestimate their competition. Good jobs frequently have several people competing for them. In your mind you may qualify for a job, but in the employer's mind someone else may be better suited and end up with the job. Figure out who you are competing with and where you fit into the job market. If you need help figuring out the kind of job(s) you can compete well for, be sure to ask us. What kind of information do you need to put my summarized resume
on the List of Candidates?Candidate listings are short and easy to create. What information is contained in a job listing?
Job listings typically contain the title of the job, type of horse(s) being worked with, the style of operation, the duties of the position, something about compensation, and contact information for the employer. If you would like a free preview of the List of Jobs, click here.
Can I find temporary work through the Equimax system?
Yes. We list a variety of temporary jobs such as summer jobs, seasonal work, jobs with an auction sale, etc. Employers also sometimes hire people temporarily to give them more time to find a permenant person. If you are out of work and it is taking a long time to find the right position, we even recommend suggesting to an employer that they hire you temporarily to give them more time to find the right person and you more time to find the right job. If you are interested in temporary work, be sure to indicate your interest in the place provided on our order form.
