Stable Help, Ranch Hand, Farm Help, Barn Help
Common Duties: daily horse care, feeding, stalls, turnouts, light maintenance, assist vet and farrier, etc.
Basic Groom
Common Duties: same as Stable Help, but including more horse care such as bathing, brushing, blanketing, handling, longeing, etc.
Caretaker
Common Duties: same as Stable Help or Groom, but may include some additional estate or household duties such as housekeeping, cooking, gardening, child care, etc.
Show Groom, Trainer's Assistant
Common duties: may include Stable Help or Groom duties, but also clipping, braiding, preparation of horses for show or sale, travel to shows, light training activities, etc.
Race Groom
Common duties: routine daily care of race horses on the farm or at the track.
Maintenance Person
Common duties: Maintenance and repair of equipment, buildings, and pastures. Typically has advanced skills such as carpentry, welding, mechanical. Minimal hands-on horse duties.
Apprentice/Working Student
Common duties: May include duties from any other position, but will include some ongoing formal on-the-job training as part of compensation.
Breeding Farm Assistant
Common duties: similar to stable help or groom, but on a breeding farm. Also includes assistance with breeding and foaling, foal handling, and minor health care.
Trail Guide, Wrangler
Common duties: caring for horses and guiding trail rides on a guest ranch or with an outfitter. May include other duties.
Exercise Rider
Common duties: breezes race horses in training. (see Schooling Rider)
Schooling Rider, Loper, Conditioning Rider
Common duties: Assist trainer by riding horses to keep them in condition or training. May include other duties similar to Stable Help or Groom.
Competitive Rider
Common duties: rides horses in competition. Generally does not include many other duties.
Assistant Trainer
Common duties: starts horses in initial training and passes them on to the trainer for finished training. May also include other duties. (see Trainer's Assistant)
Trainer (show)
Common duties: advanced training for competition, compete, sell horses, relate to clients, may also include management and/or breeding duties.
Manager/Trainer
Common Duties: Combines duties of Stable Manager or Farm Manager and Trainer(show): responsible for daily operation of a barn or an entire small operation including supervision of help, incidental decision making, record keeping, etc. May include a variety of other duties including health care, breeding, foaling. Or, responsible for entire operation including personnel, horse care, breeding, foaling, maintenance, daily administration, client relations, purchasing, etc. Also, advanced training for competition, compete, sell horses, relate to clients, may also include management and/or breeding duties and instructing riding.
Manager/Instructor
Common Duties: Combines duties of Stable Manager or Farm Manager and Riding Instructor: responsible for daily operation of a barn or an entire small operation including supervision of help, incidental decision making, record keeping, etc. May include a variety of other duties including health care, breeding, foaling. Or, responsible for entire operation including personnel, horse care, breeding, foaling, maintenance, daily administration, client relations, purchasing, etc. Also, instruct horsemanship, riding or driving, may include other duties inlcuding management and training of horses.
Instructor/Trainer
Common Duties: Combines duties of Riding Instructor and Trainer(show): advanced training for competition, compete, sell horses, relate to clients, may also include management and/or breeding duties. Also, instruct horsemanship, riding or driving, may include other duties inlcuding management.
Trainer (race)
Common duties: Manage the training of horses for racing in coordination with grooms, exercise riders and other help.
Riding Instructor
Common duties: instruct horsemanship, riding or driving, may include other duties including management.
Assistant Barn or Stable Manager
Common duties: similar to Stable Help or Groom duties, but may also include some responsibilies for daily management such as scheduling vet and farrier, purchasing supplies, assisting customers, etc.
Barn or Stable Manager
Common duties: responsible for daily operation of a barn or an entire small operation including supervision of help, incidental decision making, record keeping, etc. May include a variety of other duties including health care, breeding, foaling, training, and instructing.
Farm Manager, Working Farm Manager
Common duties: Responsible for entire operation including personnel, horse care, breeding, foaling, maintenance, daily administration, client relations, purchasing, etc. Usually works as part of a team.
Assistant Breeding Manager
Common duties: Assists with breeding, foaling, foal handling, foal care, broodmare care, light maintenance, etc.
Breeding Manager
Common duties: Breeding, stallion management, foaling, broodmare care, personnel, client relations, administrative duties.
Broodmare Manager
Common duties: broodmare care, foaling, health care. May include other duties.
Stallion Manager
Common duties: stallion care, breeding, personnel. May include other duties.
Administrative Assistant, Secretary
Common duties: office management, computer, record keeping, travel arrangements, client relations, etc.
Executive Director
Common duties: responsible for administration of the business, personnel, advertising, marketing, bookkeeping, etc. Few hands-on horse duties.
